Women in Economy
Words are my origin and the page is my home. As an artist and as an author, everything begins there.
For this body of work, I deconstructed an Arabic economics book, circa 1958. The action of destroying and deconstructing vintage books — for someone who loves and reveres books — is itself part of the artwork I am creating here. I rip out the pages, then I free words from their academic meaning. By circling words such as freedom, goods, equality, paid for, I isolate them and transform them into found poetry, giving the page a new emotional charge that settles on the female body and echoes how the world has always wanted to view women.
And then she arrives.
Confident. Defiant. Unperturbed.
The women in these works sit on top of the text. They do not illustrate it, they transcend it. They create their own space. The circled words remain visible beneath them — freedom, goods, equality, paid for — quiet and relentless.
But the lines of the words and the lines of the body remain in conversation; mirroring the powerful connection and the impact words — religion, tradition, legislation, grassroots, continue to have on the body of woman.
