Charmed, I’m sure!

Even though most of us are not truly superstitious, we like to believe that there are magic charms that would somehow help us through our bad days. Sometimes just believing that these charms will help is enough to get us through. But, maybe, just maybe, there is magic in this world. Maybe because human cells are oscillators and electric resonators our bodies can feel a lot more than we give them credit for.

It could be due to this amazing human quality, perhaps also because bracelets (from the Latin Brachium which means arm) are worn directly against the skin and close to the pulse points that they were often worn for protection and health benefits. Bracelets, armlets and bangles have adorned many muscle-endowed arms and dainty wrists since the ancient times of the Egyptians, Romans & Greeks, from the African tribes to the Aztec civilization. There is much evidence that warriors and kings wore bracelets as amulets, and it seems very likely that men wore bracelets before women pounced on this lovely idea and started wearing them, too.

Of course many bracelets have turned up in royal tombs dated thousands of years BC, because bracelets, like other forms jewelry, were also worn as status symbols or to indicate social standing.

Charm bracelets could have started as a natural extension to this form of jewelry, particularly since the bracelet itself was originally intended as a protective charm for the wearer. Such charms have been created specifically for the wearer and for a specific purpose since time immemorial. Many cultures today have various beliefs that use charms to bring good luck or love for instance. The habit of collecting charms could have evolved into more modified symbols of other human interaction as well. As a charm collection got larger & larger, the idea of hanging them all on a single bracelet would have seemed very tempting. Thus a new style was born!

Power bracelets became very fashionable some time back, because the various properties of the semiprecious stones used to make these bracelets were resurrected through diligent marketing!

Too often we let trends lead us, rather than following our own trends. It is far easier to follow, than to forge our own path. We take too much for granted in our lives. We wonder around this earth as if nothing at all can affect us, and as if we are not part of everything else we share this earth with. Our skin is our largest organ and it is so sensitive to our surroundings. Why should it not be possible that our bodies can feel the vibes created by metals, minerals & crystals?

Gibran Khalil Gibran once said:

… and your body is the harp of your soul;

and it is yours to bring forth sweet music or confused sounds…
