Are you hooked yet?

This month’s new pieces have no beads. No silver. No semiprecious stones. Just lots of time spent on choosing and mixing yards and yards of gorgeous soft yarns in mouth-watering colors and creating luscious flowers to adorn your neck.

The new collection for the new year is soft crocheted chokers, a fantasy inspiration of winter flowers that grow only in cool, crisp white snow covered gardens.

It is not very clear where and when crochet actually started, in my search I have found it may go back to the early 1800’s, and it’s said that proceeds from crochet once saved the Irish from starving.

Yet, there was a time when crochet was only for the wealthy, while knitting was left for the poor … perhaps because crochet was still in its early experimental phases, and required people to have the luxury of time to produce. An experimental art for the rich, an impractical pastime for the poor, probably because the rich not wanting their employees – such as they were – dallying with crochet while they should be cleaning the house as their mistresses did the dallying!

It is generally agreed that the word crochet in English comes from the French croc meaning hook. It is also thought that crochet’s early origins was tambour work which involved pulling thread across a fabric tightly held in a wooden frame. The craft then got rid of the fabric, becoming something like “tambouring in the air”.

Whatever its origins, crochet has a very wide following, and some people, like my mother, have become first-class crochet artists, creating masterpieces of wearable art, wall hangings, and amazingly beautiful handbags – while still having the time to teach me. And, as is the case with probably many artists, there tends to be no clearly defined border between one art and another, so I thought, why not crochet chokers? I’ve gone very whimsical and feminine with these creations, choosing yarns with colors like candy, and so incredibly soft against the skin.

On a sad note, reflecting today’s society, it is no longer permitted to carry a crochet hook in your hand luggage on most airlines – crochet hook being considered a potentially lethal weapon of mass destruction!

Happy New Year  …
