Luscious Watermelons

Love is a multi-faceted emotion that exhibits many spectacular colors, which is why, this February, I am reminded of Tourmaline, particularly Watermelon Tourmaline which is said to be the super activator of the heart Chakra..

Watermelon Tourmaline looks luscious enough to eat, with its green or blue rind and its pink or red core, giving it the reason for its name. The word Tourmaline is believed to originate from the Singhalese "touramalli", meaning multi colored stones, which actually describes the most amazing quality of this beautiful stone.

Tourmalines come in many, many colors and are sometimes mistaken for other stones. Some colors of Tourmaline even have their own name. Ruby red Tourmaline is called Rubelitte. Schorl is the black variety, while Indicolite is the blue variety, Elbaite the green and Dravite the brown. There are also pink tourmalines; orange, yellow and colorless. All colored Tourmaline gems display pleochroism which means their color changes when viewed from different angles.

Tourmalines seem to really live up to their colorful name, as they are said to enhance inspiration, encourage artist intuition as well as self confidence & understanding, and to keep a person's spirits up when everything seems to be so gloomy.

Amazing scientific qualities of this stone has meant that it was used in the production of pressure sensitive gauges for submarine instruments. In fact, the pressure gauges that measured the power of the first atomic bomb blasts were made of slices of Tourmaline.

An astonishing combination for such an exquisite stone, all of which takes me back to mouth-water watermelons and luscious love. It’s a shame that only in February do we all feel compelled to scurry around finding gifts & flowers for those we love, leaving the rest of the year barren & devoid of such special emotional expressions.

Happy Valentine’s Day!!
